The ECMWF Data Centre
The Data Centre of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) stands on an area of 21,500 square metres and consists of both regenerated and new buildings. Two Data Halls of 1000 square metres each and two Data Storage facilities of 500 square metres each, housing IT equipment (supercomputers and data storage), are located inside reinforced concrete boxes, in their turn located inside the large pavilions by Nervi called “Botti”.
It is the very first Data Centre in the world that has obtained the LEED Platinum international certification for its high environmental and energy efficiency standards achieved thanks to the regeneration of a disused building, and can also rely on the highest seismic performances being a critical and strategic infrastructure asset. Thanks to this new Data Centre, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, an international organization based in Reading (UK), can significantly improve its processing capacity regarding data on temperature and wind forecasts, with impacts on the prevention of external events.
