BLUE RECHARGE | Blue credits for water aquifers recharge and sustainability

Project in progress

The project will help reverse the current trend of overexploitation of groundwater resources and increase recharge rates of aquifers in order to rebalance them and promote their sustainable use.
This will be achieved through a system of incentives, called blue certificates, for public and private entities that support aquifer recharge. The system focuses on financial support for recharging actions; blue certificates can be sold or bought in an ad hoc market.
The blue certificates represent the overall system: the technical and financial instruments and implementation procedures will be designed, constructed and implemented by the project.
An important outcome of the project will be the development of a groundwater policy at local level, identifying binding targets for water recharge. In fact, a blue certificate would allow companies to be rewarded with a certificate for each unit of water recharged into the aquifer.
The promotion of cooperation between public authorities, research institutes and private companies will be crucial to exploit new scientific results and multidisciplinary research to improve the observation of the effects of climate change on groundwater and to plan and define adaptation strategies.
